From Booklist
*Starred Review* By any measure, Jeannette Rankin was a woman ahead of her time. She was Montana's representative in Congress before women in other states even had the right to vote. Woelfle does a terrific job introducing Rankin, beginning an attention-grabbing story in which an elderly Rankin, a lifelong pacifist, leads an antiwar protest during the 1970s. Woelfle then moves back in time, restarting the story with an anecdote about young Jeannette sewing up an injured horse on her father's ranch. Readers' interest level will stay high throughout as Rankin finds satisfaction in working as a social worker and then discovers her calling as a crusader for women's rights. Even during her two short tenures in Congress, Rankin never abandoned her core beliefs; she voted against both World War I and II declarations of war (in the case of the latter, standing alone). The high standard of writing is matched by the book's format. Informative sidebars are well integrated, and from the intense portrait on the cover to the well-chosen photos and historical material, the volume offers interesting things to look at on every page. A time line, a bibliography, and source notes bolster this robust introduction to a fascinating figure. Send younger readers to Trish Marx's Jeannette Rankin: First Lady of Congress (2006). This fascinating biography of the first woman in congress traces Jeannette from her pioneer roots in Montana to her induction into the Susan B. Anthony hall of fame. Insights not typically included in history books such as the Woman's International League for Peace and Freedom's position that the severe punishment of Germany following WWI would simply precipitate another war is fascinating and almost eerie. In the true spirit of a pioneer, Jeannette Rankin opened the way for women in politics and for the movement for peace.Although the author uses sidebars to communicate important historical background for different eras in Jeannette's life, I think the book would be best enjoyed after a student has had a full overview of US history (typically covered in grade 5). Students in high school may enjoy this as a quick read, but those doing research on Jeannette and her movements would probably prefer a more comprehensive text. The text could definitely be used as a springboard for further research with the comprehensive bibliography provided.
Rankin cast the lone vote against America's entry into World War II. Sanctifiers of that supposed "good war" execrated and demonized this courageous, visionary woman. This book, written for adolescents but suitable for adults, provides an overdue corrective, generally celebrating this eminent daughter of Montana. We love you, Jeannette!
It reads like a very well done middle school / high school text book (lots of facts in boxes throughout), but I was fascinated. Advert gave the impression that she founded the ACLU but she only supported it. Great story, I will keep it for my granddaughter.
