This book is one of the better ones on EA I have read. A controversial point (maybe) from the author is that well-known EA-frameworks are used by almost nobody as they are impractical and heavy handed. In fact, the book has an appendix detailing the devlopment of EA-frameworks from BSP in the 60's to TOGAF where he aims to show that they are basically a recycling of the same impractical ideas. He claims EA-framework in general advocate a step-wise, document heavy appraoch that in practise almost nobody follows and with no real success cases.The point of the author is that effecient EA-practices have been developed in the industry, but that these practices largely remain undocumented. So the aim of the book is to document these actually functioning practices. The approach is to classify EA-artifacts along two axis (the business vs technology axis and the generic vs spcific axis (from rules via structures to changes)). By describing six different categories of EA-artifacts (Considerations, Standards, Visions, Landscapes, Outlines, and Designs), how they are used, their relation to each other, and which stakeholders are involved in their production, the author aims to give a more organic and realistic view of how a working EA-practice can be achieved.I found the author's points convincing and the exposure pretty straightforward and easy to follow. (Disclaimer: I do have a TOGAF-certification, but I still think the books critique of TOGAF and other frameworks is valid.) I think the language could have been tightened a bit and the book contains a few unnecessary repetitions, but otherwise I found it a worthwhile read.
