I had a copy of this book for years, loaned to someone somewhere, and Poof! - gone. So now I have another copy which is going nowhere. I am a Durrell fan, of both Lawrence and Gerald for different reasons, and this one is just about perfect. It was lots of fun to read this one again, then re-read Gerald's book about the same period in the Durrell family's lives and compare their different outlooks.
The book arrived in good condition. It is an excellent book that will be particularly enjoyed by those who have been captivated by his brother Gerald Durrell's Corfu trilogy.
Durrell is always a delight for his style, but this is just a beautiful memoir.
The subtitle to this book is misleading: it is not a travel guide but a memoir in the best sense of the word. Lawrence Durrell's remembrances of pre-WWII Corfu are pure poetry and ache with nostalgia.
Delightful and an enjoyable read.
The book itself is wonderfully poetic, I share the enthusiasm of the previous reviewers.The introduction by Mr. Winchester left an unpleasant taste in my mouth, however. Although I found the information about the political situation in Corfu at the time very interesting, further on he makes some totally unnecessary and condescending comments about the books of Gerald Durrell.
slow but interesting book about a place unlikely to every be visited by most readers
This is one of the books by Laurence Durrell, brother of well known conservationist Gerald Durrell, whose family lived on Corfu in the Greek Islands for several years. He knows the area well, and has some interesting information to share.
