From School Library Journal
K-Gr 2-This beautiful picture book shows mothers and kids of different ethnicities experiencing military deployment. In the text, children compare their moms to superheroes while the watercolor illustrations depict each mother's job in the armed forces. "My mom doesn't have super-human speed, but she gets everything where it needs to go, just in time. Presents a mom driving a fuel truck in a convoy. "My mom doesn't fly in to save the day-well, sometimes she does" shows another as a medical helicopter pilot. With its reassuring message that youngsters still "feel their super love" even when moms are away from home, this book will be a winner in any community with a military presence.-Brooke Rasche, La Crosse Public Library, WIα(c) Copyright 2013. Comparing superhero abilities to the many amazing abilities, tasks, and expertise women in the military have is uplifting and eyeopening to young readers who may or may not have family in the military. This book belongs in every school and public library and it is a MUST have for any child who has a loved one who has served or is serving. Pair with Hero Dad, by the same author, to expose readers to the amazing feats of both genders in the service of protecting our country. Excellent read aloud for Veterans Day and Memorial Day.
Absolutely loved these books. We wrote a letter to our daughter on the inside and attached our pictures before we both deployed. Not many books like this for children but glad that this one is around.
Our class loved this book. The moms have big, important jobs. The kids had fun learning about the different jobs that are in the army.
This simple little book is a wonderful juxtaposition of real life soldiers and comic book heros. What a great way to tell about all the things that our military does for us from a child's point of view.
Great for my first graders.
Anything that makes children appreciate that their sorely under appreciated moms can do anything in the world is a good book for me.
Who wouldn't love this book? I read this in my work with children of military people. These moms and dads are the real deal heroes.
American flags were hung on a line behind all the boys and girls as they held picture of their moms in front of them. They smiled because they all knew that their moms were "superheroes." They weren't the kind of superheroes you might find in a movie or in a comic book. One girl's eyes widened as the threw her arms over her head to talk about her mom. "My mom doesn't leap over tall buildings--she builds them." Her mom had blueprints under one arm as she pointed out how a building should be constructed. She was a superhero of a different kind. There were all kinds of moms who flew helicopters, worked with search and rescue dogs, repaired vehicles, and transported materials. One boy thought about his mom, who was a medical professional. "My mom doesn't have super-healing powers--well maybe she does." She was a superhero of a different kind. One mom led a battalion, but that didn't mean they weren't there for their kids. There were "letters, pictures, and phone calls." Yes, they were superheroes of a different kind because they were American soldiers! This is a heartwarming tale of superhero moms, American soldiers. No doubt this tale is one that will resonate with many families who have mothers who are serving overseas. All of the women depicted are doing "superhero" style things, but in a different way. The children are very proud of their moms and their service to our country. The watercolors depict each child as they tell their story and in the background it shows their mother at work. The excitement and pride oozes from the pages. This is an excellent book for read and discuss during circle or storytime in the homeschool or classroom setting.
