I was more of a vampire girl in my youth. But I will say that I enjoyed this modern take on werewolves and I loved how it focused on a girl instead of a male protagionist (like the majority of werewolf books). I thought the plot was intriguing enough and I did like how the book had a good flow to it, but I had a lot more dislikes about this book then likes.I felt that the book became stagnant towards the end which made it really hard to finish this book. I also felt that the characters could have been developed better. I felt the side characters were a little more developed than our main, which made it a little frustrating to read. I also felt that the book could have been written a little differently. I think maybe I'm just spoiled by all of the werewolf movies, but I had expectations that weren't fulfilled in this book. This book also ended on such a cliff hanger!Verdict: While this book had a lot of promise it didn't hold up well for me. Maybe my expectations were too great for this book. If you enjoy werewolves, this is the book for you!

Book number one of a three book young adult urban fantasy series. I read the very well printed and bound trade paperback. The font selected for the book was a typeface that I had never heard of before and extremely easy on the eyes. I will purchase and read the following two books when they come out in trade paperback.“All stories are about wolves. All worth repeating, that is. Anything else is sentimental drivel." — Margaret Atwood in _The Blind Assassin_.Nessa is a high school junior who is trying to use cross country running competition as the method for getting a free college education. She was in the middle of the pack until she was badly bitten by a white wolf. Now she is a werewolf and the leader of the competition. But a college education does not seem to matter so much anymore.

Overall Assessment:This book drew me in from the very first chapter. This is not your typical angsty teenager tale, rife with love triangles and insecure teenage girls. ‘Weregirl’ is also a fresh take on the legend of werewolves, and integrates Native American folklore into the story. ‘Weregirl’ contains very light romance, but nothing graphic or exaggerated. The story is very much focused on the main character and her adventure into becoming a wolf. A fun read, overall.What I liked:– Nessa was a strong character who was well developed and interesting to read. She was mentally and physically tough. She also came from an unconventional family – single mom, brother with autism, and younger sister. Nessa is not a whiny and self-absorbed teenager because she can’t be. She is responsible for her younger siblings due to her mom’s struggle to make-ends-meet. These circumstances cause issues for her as she starts to shift from girl to weregirl.– The underlying story of Nessa’s running career kept me interested during the necessary lulls of action from the main story-line.– Secondary characters – I loved Bree and Chayton. Bree is a good balance for Nessa when she is getting inside her own head too much. Bree makes me wish I would have had a best friend like her during my youth. Chayton was great, of what we saw of him (more on my dislike of this below).What I didn’t:– I wish I could have dived a little deeper into the secondary characters, Chayton in particular.– The ending felt incomplete to me. I know this is just a personal preference, but I generally like all my ends to be tied with neat little bows and ribbons. Cute story. The names were hard to keep straight right away...but it might have been me and not the writing. It’s not a typical werewolf book. It’s clean, a little cutsey and the ending is nice. Would be a good book for 13yrs old and up. Depending on a child’s reading level, maybe even younger.I would recommend this book to anyone who likes werewolf books. Just don’t expect a lot of blood and guts.Definitely left potential for there to be more books.

Weregirl held my attention throughout. It had several twist and turns and kept me waiting for the next transformation. The sensory descriptions made me feel like I was running with Nessa. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys books dealing with shape shifting.

The author really tried to use the origins of series differently in this novel. Some of it worked, some didn't. All in all a fun story. Looking forward to reading the next.
